The Science of Lifting

As time passes, skin
slowly gives way

Every time you look in the mirror, you notice the fine lines around your eyes, a softened jawline, facial contours less defined than they used to be.
Aging does not arrive all at once, yet at some point the feeling that ‘my face has changed’ becomes unmistakable.
The loss of elasticity that begins deep within the skin leads to the wrinkles and sagging you see on the surface.

But even if time cannot be turned back, there is certainly a way to keep yourself looking your best today.
That answer is lifting treatment.

Lifting is not simply ‘pulling’ the skin. Dr. Jaewon Choi, our medical director in charge of lifting care, explains in detail how it revives the structures within the skin.

“Going beyond simple treatment, we provide scientific skin solutions grounded in extensive clinical experience and proven procedures.”

How Skin Ages

How does
skin aging begin ?

Aging progresses through multiple layers — from the epidermis, the skin's outermost layer, through the dermis, down to the deeper fat layer and the fascia layer (SMAS).

The layer that deserves particular attention is the dermis. The dermis holds many of the elements tied to skin elasticity — collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. But with age, production of collagen and elastin declines, and as the muscle and fat supporting the skin weaken, visible wrinkles, loss of firmness, and collapsing contours begin.

UV exposure, lifestyle habits, lack of sleep, stress, and improper skincare also accelerate skin aging. The reason change suddenly seems striking one day is that this weakening of multiple structures happens all at once.

Changes in the Dermis

What happens
in the dermis as we age

01. Collagen Loss · Structural Change

A major cause of reduced skin elasticity and deep wrinkle formation

  • Quantitative decline - with age, collagen production decreases while its breakdown accelerates.
  • Qualitative change - existing collagen fibers also stiffen and cross-link abnormally, impairing their function.
02. Elastin Changes

Skin stretches and loses elasticity, fine lines increase

  • Elastic fibers are destroyed or accumulate abnormally.
  • Elastin deformed by sun-induced photoaging (solar elastosis) can also build up.
03. Hyaluronic Acid Decline

Reduced skin hydration, dryness, and roughened skin texture

  • The concentration of moisture-binding hyaluronic acid in the dermis decreases with age.

How Lifting Works

Lifting is not a simple ‘pull’ —
it is a scientific process of tissue regeneration within the skin

It is easy to think of ‘lifting’ as a procedure that simply pulls the skin up from the outside. In reality, effective lifting requires a scientific approach built on structural change and recovery within the skin.

Aging begins not at the skin's surface, but within

Skin aging does not happen only in the epidermis. The fundamental causes of aging are changes across the structures that support the skin: collagen loss in the dermis, redistribution of subcutaneous fat, and loosening of the fascia layer (SMAS). To achieve a true lifting effect, treatment must target the exact layer where aging occurs and encourage fundamental improvement.

01 / HIFU

High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU)

Non-surgical lifting that reaches the SMAS layer

HIFU (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound) concentrates ultrasound energy precisely deep within the skin, creating points of thermal coagulation. The targets here are the dermis and the fascia layer (SMAS).

  • It stimulates the dermis to promote collagen synthesis and renewed hyaluronic acid production, creating an elasticity-improving effect (over the long term),
  • and it also delivers thermal energy directly to the SMAS layer, contracting the tissue and producing a lifting effect without incisions.

02 / RF

Radiofrequency (RF)

Awakening dermal collagen and elastin to restore elasticity

RF (Radiofrequency) delivers thermal stimulation to the dermis through high-frequency energy. The dermis is where the key components that maintain skin elasticity — collagen and elastin — reside; heating this layer stimulates fibroblasts to produce new collagen.

  • Immediate collagen contraction and
  • long-term collagen regeneration
  • improve skin density and elasticity at the same time.

Why Multiple Devices

Why a range of lifting devices
is necessary

Because the right lifting is different for every person and every face. No two skins are alike. Some skin is thin, some carries more fat, and for some people loss of firmness appears before deep wrinkles do. Aging moves in the same direction for everyone, but at different speeds and depths.

Each lifting device reaches a different layer and stimulates the skin in a different way. No single device can produce perfect results for everyone.

When sagging of the fascia layer (SMAS) is the problem A high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) device such as Ulthera or Doublo is needed.
When surface-level laxity and wrinkles are the greater concern A radiofrequency (RF) device such as Thermage or Oligio is far more effective.
Even the same concern differs from person to person Sensitivity to treatment, tolerance for discomfort, desired recovery speed, and how long the lift should last all vary.

The more options a clinic offers,
the safer and more precise the treatment can be.

Ulthera - HIFU high-intensity focused ultrasound lifting device

Ulthera

Ulthera is a premium lifting device that uses HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound) to deliver energy to the dermis and the fascia layer (SMAS), providing lifting and wrinkle improvement. Unlike conventional laser lifting, it delivers thermal energy directly to the skin's deep layers, increasing skin elasticity and helping improve sagging. A natural lifting effect can be expected from even a single Ulthera session, and by promoting collagen regeneration it helps skin stay firmer as time goes on. Performed non-surgically, it involves a short recovery period, and settings can be customized to each person's skin condition, making it an accessible treatment.

Thermage FLX (4th generation) - radiofrequency (RF) lifting device

Thermage FLX (4th generation)

Thermage is a lifting device that delivers radiofrequency (RF) energy deep into the skin to promote collagen production and firm the skin. Unlike earlier lifting procedures, it delivers energy directly to the dermis without damaging the skin's surface, providing an immediate tightening effect, with skin elasticity continuing to build over time. It is especially effective for wrinkles caused by loss of firmness and for facial contour lifting, and because it can be applied to delicate areas such as the eye area and jawline, it is highly versatile. Swelling or flushing may occur after treatment, but these are temporary, resolve quickly, and improvement appears relatively natural.

Concerns Lifting · Fine lines · Skin tightening · Skin elasticity

Oligio - monopolar radiofrequency (RF) lifting device

Oligio

Oligio is a lifting device that uses monopolar radiofrequency (RF) energy to carry heat deep into the skin, promoting collagen and elastin production. It helps improve sagging, increases firmness, and can also be expected to soften fine wrinkles. By delivering uniform thermal energy deep into the skin, its lifting effect is long-lasting, and an immediate tightening effect can be felt right after treatment. It can be applied not only to the face but also to the neck, arms, and other areas, allowing tailored lifting treatment. As a non-invasive procedure with little pain and no downtime, it suits busy modern lifestyles.

Concerns Lifting · Fine lines · Increased skin density · Skin elasticity

Doublo - HIFU high-intensity focused ultrasound lifting device

Doublo

Doublo is a HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound) lifting device that targets the SMAS layer deep within the skin to provide lifting and improved firmness. It works by using ultrasound energy to contract tissue within the skin and stimulate collagen production, improving sagging skin. As a non-invasive treatment it requires little recovery time, delivering energy to the deep layers without damaging the skin's surface to restore firmer skin. It is particularly effective for weakened facial contours, skin that has lost firmness, or a double chin, and by encouraging ongoing collagen regeneration, a natural lifting effect can be expected. An immediate tightening effect can be felt right after the procedure, and skin becomes visibly firmer as time passes.
