How This Equipment Works
Ulthera is a non-invasive lifting device using micro-focused ultrasound with visualization (MFU-V). Ultrasound energy passes through the skin surface and is delivered with its focus set at a defined depth.
The focal depths are 1.5mm, 3.0mm, and 4.5mm, where fine thermal coagulation points of 60–70°C are created. In tissue that receives this heat stimulus, collagen contracts and new collagen is then generated in a remodeling process, helping improve the elasticity of the dermis and the fascial layer (SMAS).
A defining feature of this device is that treatment is guided by real-time ultrasound imaging of the tissue layer being treated. Structures to avoid, such as bone and blood vessels, are visualized while deciding where to deliver the energy.
Because it creates heat only in the deeper layers, passing over the surface without any incision, it acts on the deep layers without damaging the epidermis.

How long does the procedure take?
It takes about 30 to 60 minutes for the full face. Treating the neck as well takes longer, and time for numbing cream application and waiting should be allowed for separately.
Does it hurt? Is anesthesia used?
There is a dull or prickling sensation at the moment the energy is delivered. Numbing cream is applied before the procedure, and additional pain-relief methods are used for certain areas as needed.
What about recovery and returning to daily life?
Since there is no incision, you can wash your face, wear makeup, and resume daily activities the same day. Temporary redness, mild swelling, or a pressed-in sensation may remain for a few days.
How many sessions, and how often?
It is usually planned as a single session, with changes from collagen regeneration appearing over 3 to 6 months. The interval for maintenance re-treatment is decided at consultation after assessing your skin condition.
Can it be combined with other procedures?
It is often combined with radiofrequency lifting, botulinum toxin, and fillers, each playing a distinct role. Ultrasound addresses elasticity in the deeper layers while radiofrequency tightens the dermis, so the two can be structured to complement each other.
